Winter is a great time to visit East Yorkshire’s stately homes, with many offering free or discounted entry to their grounds and gardens. Take a walk around secret walled gardens and wintry woodlands, and marvel at the grandeur of our historic houses. Sewerby Hall Gardens
Uniquely situated in a dramatic cliff-top position with spectacular views over Bridlington and set in 50 acres of early 19th Century parkland, Sewerby Hall’s Gardens are beautiful no matter the time of year. Until 24th March 2023, you are welcome to explore their award-winning gardens and woodland free of charge. The pleasure garden, walled garden, rose garden, and woodland all offer their variety of sights, smells, and sounds. After your walk, enjoy a brew and a snack from The Clock Tower Café. Sewerby Hall Gardens are dog-friendly, so it’s the pawfect day out for the whole family.
Sledmere House
Sledmere House near Driffield captivates visitors with its charm. From now until 10th February 2023, enjoy a half-price grounds and garden ticket. Enjoy a relaxing day wandering around the beautiful walled garden, explore acres of historic grounds, have fun in the adventure play area and meet the animals in the rare breed farm park. The gardens are dog-friendly too so the whole family can join in. The Coach House Café is on hand to serve up refreshments, and you can visit the Farm Shop to pick up some tasty treats to take home with you.
Burton Constable Hall Grounds
Home to the Constable family for over 700 years, Burton Constable is a truly beautiful English country house with gardens that are every bit as magical. Throughout February, children can enjoy free admission to the grounds if they come along wearing their wellies, when accompanied by a fee-paying adult. Your little ones should be prepared to splash in puddles and have lots of fun outdoors, following the trails around the grounds. The offer is limited to a maximum of two children per adult, and children must be under 16 to qualify for free admission. With over 300 acres of parkland if you’re ready to relax, Stables Kitchen serve up a tempting selection of treats. The grounds at Burton Constable Hall welcomes dogs so you can bring your furry friend along too.
Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum
Head to Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum in Pocklington and enjoy winter entry for £3 for adults and £2 for children until 12th March 2023. The gardens comprise upper and lower lakes set in nine acres of woodland and a garden, and are home to a national collection of over a hundred varieties of hardy water lily. Carp and roach inhabit both lakes in large numbers and can be hand-fed by visitors. There are walkways around both lakes, an ornamental bridge, a Victorian garden, an aviary, a restored Edwardian rock garden, and a stumpery.
