In 1917, Tolkien arrived in the East Riding of Yorkshire to recover from trench fever he\u2019d contracted while serving in the Western Front. Apart from two months at Brocton camp, he stayed in East Yorkshire until October 1918, spending time at Kilnsea and Easington.<\/p>\n
During his stay, he learned about the villages that had been lost to the sea because of coastal erosion. His wife, Edith, even danced for him at Roos and this inspired the story of Beren and L\u00fathien, which he incorporated into his tales of Middle-earth.<\/p>\n
Tolkien is said to have written a number of poems and stories during his stay in Hull and East Yorkshire, even creating two mythological languages! Some East Yorkshire place names also made it directly into his work, with Wetwang village appearing in the Fellowship of the Ring.<\/p>\n
It is now commonly acknowledged that the East Yorkshire landscape and coastline influenced Tolkien’s writing. Many even refer to the area as ‘The Tolkien Triangle’.<\/p>\n
